Katka from a small suburb Předlice does not like to think back to last year. She was in the eighth grade and she managed to fail her mathematics class. She had problems in other subjects, too.
She had to take a makeup exam in September. Will she pass? What to do now? Her parents decided to turn to People in Need´s tutoring service in Ústí nad Labem.
“When I first met Katka last year in June began tutoring her, as part of the Educational Support project, she had serious trouble with even the basic mathematical operations,” says Vendula.
However, Katka did not give up. She consistently came to our tutoring sessions once a week, all summer long. Her hard work paid off: She passed her makeup exam and was allowed to continue to the ninth grade!
“Katka´s progress is clear every time we meet for tutoring. She is more confident in maths, she is able to deduce the next steps of complex tasks and her grades show that this year there will be no need for a makeup exam,” Vendula notes with a smile.
Katka now attends ninth grade at a primary school in Trmice and her teacher is also very happy about her progress.
“Katka has improved her communication skills. She is not afraid to raise her hand and offer an answer. She also started collecting gold stars for classwork and activities. She has not only improved her maths skills, but I can see that she has grown more self-confident.”
And how does Katka see her future? Her vision is completely different from what it was last year.
Katka has wonderful plans, “I have applied to study at the vocational school for trade and crafts in Trmice. My first choice is to study to become a visual merchandiser, my second choice is baker/pastry chef. If everything goes well, I would like to complete four years of study and take a secondary-school-leaving exam. That will surely give me a better chance to find a job.”
How is People in Need’s tutoring service organized?
Volunteers and employees of People in Need tutor, for free, around 400 children from Sokolov, Chomutov, Bílina, Praha, Kladno, Ústí nad Labem, Liberec, Plzeň and Olomouc. We help primarily children who live in contemporary ghettoes, who otherwise find little motivation or necessary support in their surroundings. Tutoring takes place regularly once a week directly in children’s homes. This way we can try to also involve the parents in their children’s schoolwork and show them how they can help their kids with learning.
